What's the difference of AC motor and PMSM motor ?
At HUIFENG MOTORS, we build powerful electric motors. Two common types are AC Induction Motors (AC Motors) and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM Motors). Here’s how they differ:
The Power Inside (Rotor):
AC Motor: Uses a simple, rugged rotor without magnets. Power comes from induced current. Think strong & reliable workhorse.
PMSM Motor: Has powerful permanent magnets on the rotor. This creates a strong, fixed magnetic field.
Efficiency & Power:
PMSM: Highly efficient, especially at partial loads (common in real use). Magnets mean less energy lost as heat. Delivers more power or torque in a similar size – perfect where space or energy matters.
AC Motor: Good efficiency, but slightly lower than PMSM, mainly at lighter loads. A robust and proven design.
Control & Performance:
PMSM: Needs precise control (sensors & smart drives) to perfectly match the rotating field. Offers superior speed control, quick response, and smooth low-speed operation.
AC Motor: Easier to control initially (like simple speed drives). Very dependable for steady speeds.
Cost & Use:
PMSM: Higher initial cost due to magnets and advanced controls. Ideal for high-performance, variable speed apps (like EVs, precision tools) where efficiency pays back.
